It shall be set that the Commissioner is to act as a good employer.
By providing a safe and good working environment for all police employees.
That officers of the law receive full protection from the commissioner by way of protecting their rights and or privacy under New Zealand law.
All police officers will receive full backing from the commissioner and his office, in cases of investigation unless the officer in question is proven guilty, in which case the commissioner is no longer required to assist.
Subject to this Act, the Commissioner must operate a personnel policy that complies with the principle of being a good employer, in line with the provisions of sections 56 and 58 of the State Sector Act 1988.
Accepting that police are human. The commissioner, where possible, should move to protect the police from unrealistically high levels of expectations of conduct - for example the criticism some police recently received for their dark yet satirical email pointing out why they should shoot armed aggressors. There has to be humour in a work place - sometimes the humour will be dark and I would guess that the large majority of us accept this.
Comment
I have to disagree with dark humour about shooting people being acceptable, especially when police are actually shooting people. I think whoever wrote this was acting completely inappropriately and has a disregard for the victims and their families of police shootings.
